Best hikes near Hanoi, ranked

Eight walks within 3 hours of the Old Quarter, ranked for effort, scenery and how much history you get along the way.

Top three day hikes

1) Yen Tu Mountain (Quang Ninh, 2.5 hrs east) — the sacred Truc Lam Buddhist trail, 6 km up past 14th-century pagodas to Dong Pagoda at 1,068 m. Cable car optional, $12. 2) Hang Mua + Trang An loop, Ninh Binh (2 hrs south) — 500 stone steps for the Tam Coc karst view, then row-boat through caves. 3) Ba Vi National Park (1.5 hrs west) — three peaks, French-colonial ruins slowly eaten by jungle at the summit church. Entry $2.

Shorter and easier

4) Perfume Pagoda pilgrim trail (Huong Son) — 4 km through paddy and karst, historic since the 15th century. 5) Duong Lam ancient village walk — flat 5 km through 400-year-old laterite houses. 6) Tam Dao ridge walk (2 hrs north) — hill station built by the French in 1907, cool year-round, church ruins.

For serious walkers

7) Cuc Phuong National Park (3 hrs south) — Vietnam's oldest national park, the 7 km Big Tree trail passes a 1,000-year-old cho xanh. 8) Mai Chau valley loop — overnight from Hanoi, easy 15 km through White Thai villages. Skip Fansipan unless you’re already in Sapa; it's an 8-hour drive and the cable car ("hike") is a lift, not a walk.

Questions, answered

Best month to hike?
October and November — dry, cool, clear. Avoid June-August (humid, storms) and February drizzle.
Do I need a guide?
Only for Cuc Phuong night walks and Fansipan. Everything else is well-marked; Google Maps and Maps.me work.
