In-city water escapes
West Lake (Ho Tay) is 17 km of shoreline you can cycle in a morning — start at Tran Quoc Pagoda, founded in 541 AD, the oldest in Hanoi. Rent bikes for $3 at Xuan Dieu. Truc Bach Lake next door is smaller, quieter, with the John McCain memorial. For actual swimming, the Daewoo Hotel pool day-pass runs $18 and Sofitel Metropole is $35 — steep but you’re swimming where Graham Greene once drank.
Karst and river day trips
Trang An in Ninh Binh (2 hrs south) is the winner: a $10 sampan ride through limestone caves and past 10th-century Hoa Lu temples, the first capital of independent Vietnam. Van Long Nature Reserve nearby is quieter, $5 for a rowboat through wetlands with langurs overhead. Perfume Pagoda's Yen Stream boat is a 1-hour glide through paddies to a pilgrim cave, $6 round trip.
If you really want sand
Do it properly: Cat Ba Island (3.5 hrs by bus-ferry combo, $18) has actual beaches plus WWII-era Cannon Fort and the Hospital Cave from the American War. Skip day-trip Ha Long boats — the good ones are overnight from $120 pp. Sam Son and Do Son beaches closer to Hanoi look like a bad idea on a map and confirm it in person.
