The honest maths
A Ha Long Bay day trip costs $45-70, leaves at 8am and returns 8pm. Drive: 3.5 hrs each way. On the boat: 3-4 hrs but a chunk is lunch and one cave stop. You see maybe 5% of the 1,600 islands. For most travellers, this is a mediocre way to see one of the world's great seascapes — you’re tired, rushed and eating a set menu of frozen prawns. If Ha Long is a priority, do the overnight cruise ($120-250 pp), not the day trip.
The better alternatives
Trang An in Ninh Binh: 2 hrs by car, $10 sampan, similar limestone karst but with 10th-century Hoa Lu capital ruins as bonus. Bai Tu Long Bay: fewer boats, more solitude — but this requires overnight. Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba Island: prettier than the main Ha Long tourist zone but again, overnight only. If you want karst on a day trip, Trang An wins by a country mile. Book direct from Hanoi hostels for $28-35.
When the Ha Long day trip does work
One scenario: you have exactly 24 hours between flights, refuse to be in Hanoi that day, and just want the photo. Even then, seaplane tours from Noi Bai (Hai Au Aviation, $200-350) get you there in 30 minutes with 2 hours of quality time. For most itineraries, spend that day on the Thang Long Citadel, the Ethnology Museum and one of the French Quarter's colonial villas — you’ll learn more and be less exhausted.
