Hanoi vs Ho Chi Minh City: which should you visit?

The North-South rivalry is real — 1,760 km apart, and different in weather, food, pace and politics. Here's how to pick if you only have time for one.

How they differ

Hanoi is 1,000+ years old, seasonal, cooler, walkable, dense with pre-colonial layers — temples from the 11th century, guild streets from the 13th, French villas from the 1900s. Saigon (HCMC) is 300 years old, hot year-round, sprawling, faster-moving, richer, more Cantonese and Khmer influenced. Hanoi's pho has fewer herbs and a clearer broth; Saigon's has bean sprouts, basil and hoisin sauce. Coffee: egg coffee in Hanoi, salt coffee and coconut coffee born in the south. Beer: bia hoi ($0.40) is a Hanoi thing.

Who prefers which

Choose Hanoi if: you like history, walkable old towns, cool weather, quieter evenings, cultural depth, and the north's mountains (Sapa, Ha Giang). Choose HCMC if: you like nightlife, modern skyscrapers, warmer weather, Mekong Delta day trips, and the Vietnam War history sites (Cu Chi tunnels, Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum). For first-time visitors to Vietnam with 10+ days, do both — a 2-hr flight or 33-hr train links them, and you’ll see how genuinely different Vietnam's two halves are.

The historical traveller's call

Hanoi wins for the pre-20th-century historical traveller — Thang Long Citadel, Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, ancient villages like Duong Lam. Saigon wins for 20th-century political history — the fall of Saigon 1975, French colonial rubber plantations, the American War. If you love layered cities where 1010 meets 2026 in one alleyway, Hanoi. If you love a city that feels like it was invented last Tuesday and lit up neon, Saigon. Both are worth your time; Hanoi rewards slower travellers more.
